Start with DeSoto Falls flatwater
The official park paddle launches above A. A. Miller Dam and travels upriver and back. Rentals and assistance are offered by the park subject to its current schedule. Stay well away from the dam and spillway.
Little River requires planning
Conditions change with rainfall. Official NPS pages describe differing rapid classes across sections and flows. Do not assume backcountry water is beginner-safe or choose a section without current local advice.
The canyon is technical
Water below Little River Falls is for advanced and expert whitewater paddlers. Waterfalls, strainers, cold water, and rapid rises create serious hazards. Use qualified local guidance and an appropriate rescue plan.
Every outing
Wear a properly fitted life jacket, paddle with a partner, and share a float plan. Know the put-in and take-out, monitor weather and water levels, and cancel when conditions exceed your skill.
